Festival of books, being a better blogger

On Saturday, CC and I trekked down to Providence for the Rhode Island Festival of Children's Books and Authors. Held at the Lincoln School (which seriously has a nicer campus than the college where I teach), it was a veritable glut of the gods and goddesses of kid lit. We saw:

• Gregory Maguire (who plays a MEAN game of Peek-a-Boo)
• Chris Van Allsburg
• Sara Pennypacker
• David Macaulay
• Susan Meddaugh
• Bill Harley

...and others!

CC did *very* well standing in line for signed books. However, sitting quietly in Chris Van Allsburg's talk? Not so much. We waited outside and listened through the door. Next year, she assures me, she will be quieter.

We were also fortunate enough to meet up with kmarcus  !

I've been a bad blogger lately. Although I've been reading my Friends pages, I haven't been commenting as much as I'd like or posting much lately. So I'm renewing my commitment to a writing/reading post on Mon/Wed, and of course the Friday Five!

ETA, thanks to  kmessner  : David Macaulay sat for an extra hour and a half beyond his assigned time signing books, creating a unique illustration in each one. A classy guy--and everyone was so grateful that he did that. It's clear that he appreciates his readers very, very much.

That's one awesome lineup! I just read David Macauley's new book THE WAY WE WORK, and I am in absolute awe. He's the keynote at a conference I'm presenting at in Vermont this spring, and I can't wait to hear him speak.

He was SO NICE--I should have mentioned that he sat for an EXTRA hour and a half to sign everyone's books--and he illustrated each one he signed (which is probably why it took him so long to get through the line!). You will love him.

Chris Van Allsburg? OK, so you couldn't stand in his room to listen, but I'm still SO JEALOUS!!! Glad you had a great time!

Erin: Do you mean Kim Marcus? Her LJ user name is KMARCUS

I've met Gregory Maguire. Dined next to him at a conference dinner. He is beyond delightful.

And the rest of that lineup's not too shabby, either. Sounds like a fine day!

Re: Kimmar?
Whoops--thanks, Pamela! Fixed that. Too many K's, Kims, etc. on livejournal!

It was a great day.

And there she is now. {}
How is the class going, Kimmie?

Class is going really well. We've only met twice so far, but no one tried to run out the door :).

Well yay for being a better blogger, but don't be hard on yourself. You've got a baby! Among other things.

And I say one laughing baby with pumpkin picture is worth many many other posts.

I know. She could just post that picture every day and I'd be ok with that. :-)

Hold on. Do you mean Gregory Maguire played peek-a-boo with CC? Cause that's totally rock star. All the other babies are going to be SO jealous! ;)
